About The Local Meadow
A thoughtful approach to plants, land, and ecological stewardship.
Background and Professional Experience
The Local Meadow was founded by Shannon Phelan, an environmental professional with more than 23 years of experience in environmental consulting and a career focused on how land use, chemicals, and management decisions affect both ecosystems and human health. My work has included soil and groundwater sampling, hazardous materials research, and environmental reporting, as well as collaborating closely with an environmental toxicologist on human health risk assessments related to chemical exposure. This experience has given me a practical, science-based understanding of how contaminants move through soil and water—and how closely environmental quality is tied to the places where people live, garden, and spend time outdoors.
Education, Training, and Credentials
I am a Certified Pollinator Steward through UMass Amherst Extension (2025) and am nearing completion of the Basic Certificate program through the Native Plant Trust. I have also completed numerous courses focused on invasive plant species identification and removal, with an emphasis on practical, landowner-friendly approaches to restoring native habitat.
Continual learning is central to my work, and I regularly seek out training that strengthens both ecological understanding and real-world application.

Community Involvement and Stewardship
In addition to my professional background, I volunteer with the Grafton Land Trust, supporting local land conservation and stewardship efforts. I also coordinate volunteer efforts for Grafton’s “Triangle Garden,” a new native plant garden on MassDOT land.
The Philosophy behind The Local Meadow
The Local Meadow grew out of a belief that home landscapes matter. I am passionate about helping people rewild their land in ways that feel achievable—whether that means reducing lawn space, replacing invasive plants, or choosing plants that genuinely support pollinators and wildlife. In my volunteering work helping people choose native plants, I realized there was a strong demand for neonic-free plants, but the nurseries working hard to grow sustainably are spread across Massachusetts and not convenient to gardeners in the Grafton area.
Every plant offered through The Local Meadow is selected with intention, prioritizing neonicotinoid-free sourcing, ecological function, and long-term environmental health. The goal is not perfection, but progress toward healthier soils, cleaner water, and more resilient local ecosystems.
Working with Homeowners and Professionals
The Local Meadow supports both DIY homeowners and trade professionals alike. Whether you’re planting a small garden, reducing lawn over time, or managing a larger landscape project, the goal is the same: access to plants that are grown responsibly and chosen for real ecological benefit.
I welcome collaboration with landscapers, designers, restoration professionals, and land stewards, and I also enjoy helping homeowners who want to take a hands-on approach. The Local Meadow exists to create a shared, trustworthy connection between people seeking sustainably grown plants and the nurseries that grow them well.
